OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard & Printers

Apparently a very large subset of all printers, including the majority of HP printers, have serious problems with OS X 10.6. Some printer vendors, such as Brother, have very few problems. Some, such as Epson, have problems with a number of specific printers, but mostly are okay. And then there's HP, which is a disaster.

What, other than suggesting that users not use HP printers (and scanners and multi-function devices) should be done about this?
