Default Are New 'Mega' Portable Hard Drives Worth It?

Recent improvements in memory technology have allowed manufacturers to increase the storage size of portable hard drives. Some of these drives can now exceed 1-3 TB.

That sort of capacity is impressive. But is it worth it?

For most consumers, the size of these drives would far exceed necessity. This makes them somewhat less cost effective than more "traditionally" sized drives.

For businesses or even individual users who dohave larger data needs, the new drives might be more in line in terms of cost effectiveness. However, the primary advantage of such a large drive would seem to be eliminating the need for multiple back ups. This poses a risk when the entirety of a backup or external support is on one device.

Portability - another big selling point for portable drives - also increases the risk of the drive being lost, damaged, or stolen. Keeping everything on one 'mega' drive is, therefore, a risky proposition.

For now, the smartest move might be to go with one of the new drives if the cost is not an issue andyou have a second option for backing up your data.
